Abstract

On December 18, 2021, there are landslides occurred in the upper stream of Berembun Forest or the Jeram Toi Recreational Forest, which scattered in the northern region of Batang Penar Catchment, in Negeri Sembilan state. The water quality of the Batang Penar River that drains from the catchment was studied to examine the impacts of landslides on its sedimentation and water quality. The precipitation data and water quality parameters in 2021 and 2022 were recorded at 15-minute and 2-month intervals. The descriptive, visual, and statistical analysis was conducted to examine the difference in water quality parameters (total suspended solid, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and ammoniacal nitrogen) and their correlation with rainfall, between the period before and after the landslide events. Statistical analysis conducted includes T-test analysis between the mean, simple regression model, and Pearson product moment of correlation coefficient. The factors that influence water quality were also studied, which include the land use land cover, catchment area, and drainage length per sampling station, in addition to the rainfall. The result shows that there are spatial variations between sampling stations and temporal variations between sampling dates. TSS mean level increases significantly after landslide events, while BOD, COD, and AN show insignificant difference. The correlation of rainfall with TSS and COD increases while the other decreases after landslide events. The study concludes that landslide has some effects on water quality, suggesting the importance of landslide prevention and scar treatment.
