Abstract
The reliance on wood for laminated panels faces challenges from declining resources and heightened demand, straining natural forests and raising concerns of deforestation. Yet, the utilization of overlooked biomass residues presents an opportunity for innovative product development. To encounter resources scarcity, exploring wood-like alternatives such as bamboo and OPT becomes pivotal. These materials offer promise due to their abundance, wood-comparable traits, and adaptable manufacturing suitability, potentially easing strain on wood resources in laminated panel production. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of pressing pressure on the physical and mechanical properties of plywood from Semantan (Gigantochloa scortechinii) and oil palm trunk as a potential for the manufacturing of interior furniture. The panels underwent assessment for their physical and mechanical properties, with comparisons drawn against control panels made solely from Semantan bamboo crushed mat, outer and inner OPT veneers. In this study, three types of laminated panels were fabricated based on the configuration of bamboo crush mat and OPT veneer with two different pressing pressure which were 20-ton force and 28-ton force. There are: BBB (100% made of crushed bamboo mat), panel OOO (100% made of outer OPT) and III (100% made of inner OPT). The 3-ply laminated panel arranged in perpendicular direction which were then cold pressed (5 kg/cm2; 15 minutes) and hot pressed (25 kg/cm2; 15 minutes; 140 oC). The adhesive used was urea-formaldehyde (UF) with a spread rate of 250 g/m2 and the hardener used was Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). Then, the feasibility of laminated panels was validated through physical and mechanical tests. The results showed that different types of laminated panels affect the physical and mechanical properties of laminated panels
