Abstract
Trend analysis of wood-based products is important for long-term planning. A study was conducted to analyze the trend of sawn timber production, consumption and export in Peninsular Malaysia. Specifically, the study attempted to determine the trend and growth rate of sawn timber production, consumption and export. The study covered the period from 1990 to 2020 using yearly data collected from statistics published by the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia. The regression analysis was used to estimate the average annual growth rate. From 1990 to 2020, the production of sawntimber in Peninsular Malaysia exhibited a declining trend, with decreases from 1990 to 1994 and a slight downturn from 1996 to 1998, attributed to the 1997 economic crisis and weak export demand. Sawntimber consumption in the region showed fluctuating trends, rising from 1996 to 2001, then declining from 2001 to 2002 due to the Asian economic crisis. Consumption patterns seemed random, influenced by inconsistent demand for construction materials. Sawntimber export volume fluctuated, with East Asia as the main market, followed by ASEAN and West Asia. Export values showed similar fluctuations, with East Asia, the European Union, and West Asia demonstrating higher demand. ASEAN maintained significant demand, while North America and Oceania showed comparatively lower values, potentially influenced by housing markets and construction activities. Overall, economic conditions and construction activities played pivotal roles in the trends observed.
