Abstract

This research project aims to find whether 2.5 years old of Paraserianthes falcataria (Batai) species can be harvested. The Batai species is a fast-growing tree that ensures a consistent supply of raw materials for the furniture industry. Therefore, physical, and mechanical testing is needed before these 2.5-year-old Batai are harvested. Four hundred fifty samples were prepared for flexural testing and compression testing. Furthermore, the relationship between density and vertical positions was investigated. In addition, the performance of the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) was calculated to collect data for bending testing. The value for average MOE is 4986.12 MPa and the average value for MOR is 36.97 MPa while the value for compression strength testing is 19.37 MPa. Based on the findings, the bending strength of the vertical position (MOE & MOR) decreases along the position starting from the bottom (5299.30, 39.37 MPa), middle (4917.68, 37.80 MPa) and top (4741.37, 33.65 MPa) positions. Lastly, five failure modes were identified using standard ASTM D143 for Static Bending Test and the six failure modes for Compression Testing.
