Abstract
Forest plantations are important in solving the growing concern over timber shortages in Malaysia. A fast-growing hardwood species, Eucalyptus, is one of the new species included in the Forest Plantation Development Programme by the government. To foster and encourage the development of the Eucalyptus species, the stakeholders' perspectives on its current status and potential were useful. This study investigates the perceptions of government agencies on the Eucalyptus industry in Malaysia in terms of its market, growth, and related issues and challenges. Online surveys through using Google Forms were used to collect the data from relevant government agencies in Malaysia. This study found that the majority of agencies were positive about the potential growth of the Eucalyptus industry. Both domestic and export markets were found to be potential markets for Eucalyptus wood products. The main factors that contributed to issues and challenges in the Malaysian Eucalyptus industry were technical assistance and research factors, plantation management and silviculture factors, and policy and finance factors. More research and development (R&D) were the main recommendations to address the issues and challenges in the Eucalyptus industry. Therefore, policymakers need to formulate relevant strategies and policies to further develop the Eucalyptus industry in Malaysia.
