Abstract
Introduction: Despite the health concerns of exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS), Malaysian men especially in the rural area continue to smoke in the home. Encouraging the implementation of Smoke-Free Homes (SFH) by smoking outdoor is the most logical solution to reduce SHS instead of solely focusing on smoking cessation. Objectives: This study aims to assess knowledge, beliefs and perception on SHS and barriers/challenges related to the implementation of SFH to reduce second-hand smoke exposure among the population in the rural area of Felda Soeharto Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor. Methodology: This study incorporates two types of study design namely quantitative (cross-sectional) and qualitative. The quantitative study involved 30 individuals who took part in a questionnaire survey on knowledge of SHS and SFH. After considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, five individuals were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview session to explore beliefs and perceptions on SHS and barriers to the implementation of SFH. Quantitative data were managed and analysed using the SPSS version 28 while for the qualitative study, thematic analysis was performed using Nvivo version 12. Results and Discussion: Regarding knowledge about SHS and SFH, only (27) 90.0%of the respondents have good knowledge score. The mean of the knowledge of SHS and SFH was 2.80 ± 0.610. There was no association between knowledge towards secondary smoking with age group, level of education, and income which is p>0.05. Thematic analysis found that there was limited knowledge regarding risk of smoking to health. Thus, participants may not be able to determine the solution for SFH. In addition, their habit of smoking will be one problem to make Smoke Free Home. Conclusion: The level of knowledge on SHS and SFH among most of the population of Felda Soeharto are in the satisfactory level. To make it easier to develop suitable interventions that address issues experienced by men in rural Malaysia, it is important to have deeper understanding on the factors that influence men’s decision in order to make their homes smoke-free. Keywords: Tobacco smoke, passive smoking, smoking cessation, smoking prohibition, home smoking ban
