Abstract

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have been widely used in detection of varieties of materials which have been receiving many praises for their sensitivity. In this research, the sensitivity of an SPR was enhanced by modifying a gold thin film with graphene oxide (GO) and pyrene (Py) for the detection of cholesterol. By coating the gold thin film with a graphene oxide/pyrene (GO/Py), the SPR can be detected as low as 5 nM. Moreover, this gold-modified SPR has a high sensitivity of 0.0046° nM-1 and 1.632 x10-4° nM-1. The SPR results also followed the Langmuir isotherm model with a binding affinity of 19.4318 nM-1., which further confirmed the sensitivity of the SPR sensor. In addition, by using this gold-modified thin film, the lowest full-width half maximum (FWHM) was 2.652° at 10 nM of cholesterol concentration which give the highest detection accuracy (DA) of 0.3771/°. Lastly, the SNR of the SPR signal can be seen was proportional to the cholesterol concentrations.
