Abstract

Introduction: Since pandemic COVID-19, there has been a spurt growth of online shopping activities. More goods need to be delivered daily which opens for more job opportunities. Job as courier workers is mostly freelance, temporary, highly flexible and with independent contract work. This work condition may cause higher level of job insecurity which is highly related to mental health issues. Objectives: This research aims to determine the relationship between socio demographic, work background, job insecurity and psychosomatic symptoms among courier workers. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 134 courier workers who were participated voluntarily by convenient sampling method based on inclusive criteria of this study. A set of self-administered online questionnaires were distributed which included questions on sociodemographic and work background, Job Insecurity Scale (JIS-18) measuring the level of job insecurity and Physical Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15) measuring the psychosomatic symptoms of stress. The data obtained were analysed using IBM SPSS Version 28 to run descriptive, chi-square and multiple linear regression analyses Results: Majority of the respondents was middle-aged workers (49.3%) aged between 26 and 33. Male respondents were the majority (82.8%). Job insecurity recorded that 72.4% of the respondents have low job insecurity and 27.6% of the respondents recorded high job insecurity score. Most of the respondents recorded mild psychosomatics symptoms 72 (53.7%). There was a significant relationship observed between job tenure with job insecurity (p=0.001). There was a significant relationship between job insecurity with psychosomatics symptoms (p=0.006). Conclusion: There is an association between job insecurity and psychosomatic symptoms among courier workers. Hence, courier service providers need to optimize work employment and management. An effective communication needs to establish between top management and courier workers to inform any amendment in job status to reduce the job insecurity among workers.
