Abstract

In recent years, Malaysia has recorded an increase in human-wildlife conflict incidents. These conflicts occur in urban and more so in rural areas. To better understand how the local community reacts to human-wildlife conflicts, a qualitative study was conducted among residents of Kampung Aur Gading at Pahang. A semi-structured interview was conducted among 20 residents of Kampung Aur Gading, aiming to explore interviewees’ perceptions of the causes of human-wildlife conflicts, their reactions to conflict scenarios, and mitigation actions deemed appropriate to address human-wildlife conflict in their village. The respondent have stated that the main cause of human-wildlife conflict in Kampung Aur Gading is due to habitat loss, lack of law enforcement, and lack of awareness. Among the responses of the local community to the human-wildlife conflict situation is to report to the authorities, escape from wildlife conflict, or take no action. The residents of Kampung Aur Gading have also taken their own mitigation measures including setting up traps and shooting wild animals during human-wildlife conflict situations. To improve the management system in the future, the residents of Kampung Aur Gading suggested the need to create education and awareness campaigns, organize frequent patrolling and monitoring activities, and cooperate between residents and the authorities in dealing with human-wildlife conflict issues. The study provides a better understanding of villagers' responses, concerns and needs to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in their village which are essential in assisting the villagers and authorities identify appropriate collaborative mitigation measures.
