Abstract

Zoo Negara is one of the ecotourism destinations famous for its variation of animal species in Kuala Lumpur. Yet, amidst its acclaim, public sentiment, reflected in online reviews, raises concerns about the animals’ well-being in the zoo. The main purpose of this research is to investigate visitors' perception towards wildlife management (based on three aspects - foods, habitat, and safety and environment) and conservation initiatives at Zoo Negara. A set of questionnaires was utilised to achieve the research objectives and the data collection was collected at Zoo Negara between October and December 2023. Data were analysed using descriptive and correlation statistical analysis. The results show that visitors had moderately positive perceptions towards animal food, habitat management, and animal safety and environment. In terms of wildlife conservation initiatives at Zoo Negara, the study showed positive perceptions towards the management effectiveness offered in Zoo Negara where a strong visitor appreciation for direct contributions to animal welfare and conservation was noticed. Findings also indicate a positive evaluation of conservation initiatives, with the majority expressing satisfaction with the existing animals' well-being at the zoo. This research also found moderate positive correlations between visitors’ perception of wildlife management and overall satisfaction with conservation initiatives. The results indicate that current conservation initiatives through a variety of programs have contributed to the positive management of animal welfare. In conclusion, this research emphasises the good wildlife management and conservation initiatives at Zoo Negara. It also highlights the crucial role of public perception in elevating the zoo's dedication to enhancing wildlife welfare and the overall success of the initiatives it provides in the future.
