Abstract
Accidents involving wild animals are increasing as the human population grows and the interaction between humans and wildlife increases. Human and wildlife conflict is a serious issue, particularly of wildlife roadkill. Between 2015 and 2019, 2055 wildlife deaths were caused by roadkill in Peninsular Malaysia. This study was conducted to identify the emotions, attitudes and behaviours of drivers towards wildlife and wildlife roadkill incidents in Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 162 respondents with driving licenses and who have direct experience in roadkill were involved in the study. Online self-reported questionnaire was used to collect the information and the data was described using descriptive analysis such as frequency, percentage and mean. The result shows that drivers have neutral emotions, attitudes and behaviour toward wildlife and road-killed wildlife. They know some of the hotspot areas with frequent wildlife road killed incidents such as the East Coast Expressway, in the state of Terengganu, the Maran – Kuantan road in Pahang and Kulai – Kota Tinggi in Johor are wildlife roadkill hotspots in Malaysia but they lack knowledge of other specific locations. In terms of their actions taken to prevent wildlife roadkill, the majority would follow the driving speed limit. The most effective warning systems to prevent wildlife roadkill among drivers are wildlife signs and the installation of flashlights. Based on the findings, more efforts are needed to increase knowledge, and instil positive emotion, attitude and behaviour towards wildlife and road-killed wildlife.
