Abstract
GIC is widely used and developed in dentistry since its discovery in the late 1960s. This biomaterial is adored for its superior bioactivity and anticariogenic properties but lack in mechanical properties. In this thesis, GIC is fabricated using ASF glass produced from clam shells and SLS glass as part of its components. Three modifications are done to the ASF glass beforehand to study the mechanical properties of GIC produced. The ASF glass is divided into three groups to fabricate three sets of GIC namely GIC1, GIC2 and GIC3. GIC1 has its ASF glass undergo sintering at different temperatures, GIC2 has its ASF glass incorporate with different wt% of HA and GIC3 has its ASF glass undergo sintering then incorporated with different wt% of HA. Each batch GIC produced undergo different aging times ranging from 1 day to 28 days. The analysis of the GIC are compressive strength and Vickers microhardness test. The results of the GIC are lower than the expected values due to a long stretch of time out of water before analysis. This results in the decline in mechanical properties of the specimen. The study should be redone to obtain more accurate results to study the strengthening mechanisms.
