Abstract

Introduction: High sulfate concentration in surface water is becoming issue around the world. Most of the sulfates problems are resulted from industrial development. Various fonns of Sulphur-containing chemicals are commonly used in the production of fertilizers, fungicides, algae control and insecticides, as well as in the production of glass, paper and wood pulp industries, soap and detergent, in medicine, in hide-skin processing and water treatment. The damage caused by sulfate emissions is not direct, since sulfate is a non-toxic compound. However, high sulfate concentrations can unbalance the natural Sulphur cycle. Objectives: To determine the percentage of sulfate removal in grey water and to select the best activated carbon ratio in nutrient removal. Methodology: In this study, chemical activation by ZnCh was used to produce the activated carbon. The grey water will be filtered through the activated carbon to remove SO4 concentration. Sample will be analyzed using ion chromatography and the percentages of SO4 removal and the best activated carbon will be detennined. Result and discussion: The result in this studies shows removal of percentage for SO4 is 42.62% and the best activated carbon was occur at 20% ZnCh (0.025) at 30 minutes time shaker. Conclusion: Different concentration and time shaker will lead to different percentage of removal for SO4. Keywords: Activated carbon, banana waste, chemical activation, ZnCh, sulfate
