Abstract
Introduction: Many occupations require the workers to stand for long periods of time without enough interventions such as breaks or resting periods. Those working in assembly production lines, are the most widely group of workers exposed to prolonged standing. A number of studies have proved that prolonged standing is the cause of pain and discomfort in the back and lower limbs. During prolonged standing, the muscles and ligaments undergoes static loading which causes the compression of tissue in the joints and venous pooling in the leg areas which leads to the cause of fatigue (Freitas et al., 2005). Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of calf massage on comfort due to prolonged standing in upright position Methodology: Generally, experimental group and control group respondents are fitted with and without calf massage treatment and the effectiveness of the calf massage treatment are assessed through experimental work by testing respondents to stand for 2 hours with and without calf massage treatment. A Borg's Scale questionnaire are given to be answered by respondents at every 15 minutes during the 2 hours period of standing from the beginning until the end. The questionnaire data shows the feed backs on the effect of calf massage treatment on prolonged standing fatigue. Result and discussion: The findings showed that the distribution of discomfort rating is higher in control group compared to experimental group. Both groups did not exceed break point (Borg's Scale rating > 5). There is significant difference of calf massage treatment effects when compared with control and experimental group. There are strong correlation between calf muscle discomfort and other body parts discomfort in control group mostly lower leg extremities. Conclusion: The application of calf massage treatment prototype towards respondents do help them in reducing the discomfort level and preventing them from muscle fatigue during prolonged standing. Keywords: Calf massage treatment, Borg scale, discomfort level, muscle fatigue, prolonged standing
