Abstract
Summary: Temperature plays a major role in influencing the natural physical phenomena and our daily tasks. It is one of the ergonomics factors, which can affect our comfort and task performance if it is not properly controlled. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of temperature on physiological parameters (blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature), thermal comfort and task performance among undergraduate students of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. 48 subjects were recruited and participated in this study. Subjects were required to perform a typing task based on a selected article for the duration of 20 minutes under 3 different temperature settings. Articles for typing tasks were different for each session in order to prevent the subjects to memorize its contents. Blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature of the subjects were measured for each session after the subjects finished the typing tasks. The results showed that there were significant differences of thermal comforts (p<0.05) and task performance (p<0.05) under 3 different temperature settings. However, physiological parameters showed that there were no significant differences between these 3 temperature settings (p>0.05). These showed that thermal comforts and task performance are affected and depended on different temperature settings. Generally, the optimum temperature setting for thermal comfort and task performance is 24°e. In conclusion, the study showed that thermal comfort and task performance were significantly difference under different temperature settings.
