Abstract
Introduction: Microplastic pollution has received increased attention over the last few years. Microplastics are particles with size of 1 to 1000 µm. The two types of microplastics are primary microplastics which are in the original form such as plastic resin, microbeads and in air blasting technology and secondary microplastics which are fragmented from larger plastic items. The small sizes of microplastics can be ingested directly or indirectly by marine organism. Objectives: To investigate microplastics loads in Mackerel scad and Oxeye scad. Methodology: Fifteen samples of Mackerel scad and 15 samples of Oxeye scad was collected from Endau coastal area. The internal organ of the fish was removed and digested in 10% KOH for 48hours in 40°C. The digestion was isolated in filtration using filter paper. The filter paper was then examined under microscope. Raman spectroscopy was used to know the polymer composition of the particles. Result: The findings show that four particles in Oxeye scad were identified. Two of the particles are in form shape and another two are in fragment. Based on the particles, two of them confirmed as microplastics as it contained polypropylene and phthalocyanine. Polypropylene is the most common polymers identified in the previous studies which are used for packaging. Phthalocyanine is widely used for plastic materials and as additive in dyeing. Conclusion: Differences in microplastics load between species might be expected due to difference in diet, feeding behavior and size of species. Even though only 6.67% samples of fish ingest microplastics, the amount of it might be increase because the production of plastic is increasing as high demands of plastic product thus increasing mismanaged plastic waste. Keywords: Microplastics, Raman spectroscopy
