Abstract
Introduction: Prolonged standing has been identified as one of the risk factors which associated with occupational injuries such as musculoskeletal disorders. The workers tend to suffer from Musculoskeletal Disorders after chronic exposure of prolonged standing while performing their task. Such disorders can cause performance decrement and high rate of absenteeism among the workers. Therefore, the workers need footrest as the ergonomic intervention in order to reduce their discomfort level of muscle. Objectives: Therefore, the primary aim for this study is to determine the effectiveness of footrest on muscle discomfort in prolonged standing. Methodology: A total of 100 respondents were divided into Control (without footrest) and Experimental Group (with footrest). They performed task given while standing for 2 hours continuously. The muscle discomfort level of both groups were evaluated by using Borg's Scale CR- 10 Questionnaire every 15 minutes. Results and Discussion: Knees (3.10), calves (4.10) and feet (4.50) which had the highest mean without footrest (Control Group) then reduced to 1.15, 2.65 and 2.4 7 respectively during intervention phase (Experimental Group). However, the average mean of both groups did not reach the 'break point' (> 5). Furthermore, there was significant difference of discomfort rating between both groups at thigh, knees, calves and ankles/feet part (p < 0.05). On the other hand, all body parts discomfort (neck/head, shoulder, upper back, arms and hands, low back, buttocks, thigh, knees and calves) indicated significant relationship with ankles/feet discomfort. Conclusion: The intervention phase (Experimental Group) did lessen the discomfort level of muscle among respondents compared to nonintervention phase (Control Group). This concluded that it was significant enough to state that footrest is a success ergonomic intervention in terms of reducing muscle discomfort.
