Abstract
Introduction: Children, teachers and other staff spend 7 to 9 hours of their daily time in schools, places where there are a wide variety of risks and hazards that may negatively affect their health and wellbeing. In Malaysia, there are increasing in number and severity of incident cases in schools related to safety and health in both primary and secondary schools. Limited studies found to identify the hazard, assess the risk and control the risk at school in Malaysia. Objective: To identify the hazards at school, analyze the risk level and identify the suitable control measures by using Hazard Identification. Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC). Methodology: Research was conducted in 9 schools in Klang Valley area among both primary and secondary schools between January to March, 2017. Method and form from the HlKARC guideline from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) was used to assess and evaluate the hazards occurred in the schools. The approach taken in this research is through qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative approach was carried out during monitoring and observation. and the quantitative approach was carried out during analyzing the risk level using the risk matrix. Result and Discussion: Safety hazards are the most common hazards found in the school, followed by health hazards and environmental hazards. The level risk; (Safety Hazard = medium risk), (Health Hazard = medium risk), (Environmental Hazard = medium risk). Most of the hazard identified shown that the main problem is due to lack of maintenance of the facilities and the school structures. Conclusion: The average risk level for the schools in this study was on the medium level and strongly recommended that some preventive actions should be taken in order to reduce the risk level to low risk in the future. Use of a designed checklist related to safety and health can be helpful, quick and easy to use by the school management. Ministry of Education should establish their policy related to safety and health in school and ensure that the policy have been fully complied by the school management.
