Abstract

In verifying the material properties of rock, laboratory test need to be carried out to ensure a safe design of structures. Among the most common rock properties verified in laboratory are uniaxial compressive strength test (UCS) and Point Load Index Strength test Is. These two rock properties are often correlated for ease of evaluating rock properties particularly during preliminary design stage. The focus of this study is to verify a correlation factor between UCS and Is and to compare with established correlation. Point Load Test is one of the method that have been used to determine the Index Strength Is of rocks. In this study, 30 samples of granite were used to determine their index strength by conducting axial tests. All samples are cylindrical shape with 50mm diameter and 100mm length. Samples were from several locations in analysis. The failure load results from the Point Load Test were recorded for each sample. The range of Is for granite is 10.28 to 0.98MPa. The two correlation equations obtained from the analysis were y = 23.238x + 13.116 and y = 9.4652x + 5.7788.
