Abstract
Malaysia is currently the world's fifth largest producer of natural rubber (NR) after Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and China. However, the use of Malaysia High Damping Rubber (MHDR) is considerably low, said the Malaysian Rubber Board deputy director (research and innovation) Dr Zairossani Mohd Nor (Bernama, 2016). MHDR is commonly used as base isolation in structures to dissipate energy cause by earthquake and it is proved to be very effective since it had been used in the Second Penang Bridge (Malaysia), Wika Tower (Indonesia), Parand Downtown Project (Iran) and others. However, base isolation damper is not suitable to use for tall buildings and huge loading structures. Therefore, MHDR is suggested to be implemented in bracing system of structures. Hence, it is also can be implemented in constructed structures. For this purpose, finite element model for cross bracing framed structure with MHDR damper device is developed and nonlinear static analysis of structure under cyclic load is performed in order to evaluate effect of MHDR in the damper device. Result of numerical analysis proved the high potential of MHDR damper device in reduction of earthquake effect on structural response and protection of structure against intense earthquake event.
