Abstract
In the past 30 years till now, the use of medicinal herbs as natural drug in food product as well as pharmaceutical application keep increasing due to the presence of bioactive compound in the plants. Reviews of literature on medicinal plants have been done in the past by several authors and research groups. However, focus on effective way in consuming and preserving the nutrients of the herbs still in need to meet the consumer acceptance and interest. Lacking in the knowledge and research on the correct procedure preparation and ingredients in the formulation of medicinal herbs products need more attention by researchers and authors. In this review, the use of selected medicinal herbs in treating certain diseases and their future development in processing and their preferred form of delivery are well stated. It is clear from the review that different drying techniques result in different nutrient loss. Besides that, suitable and sustainable drying technique for production of medicinal herbs were identified. In addition, trend formulation of herbal medicinal ingredients in the most appropriate proportions was investigated. This includes the conversion of the herbs into consumable forms. From this review, it was found out that there is not much research on the optimum temperature and time for particular drying method with respect to each of herbs and future response on the form of herbal medicine. So far this survey only manages to come across the formulations of Moringa oleifera and Syzygium polyanthum tablets. Next, it was observed that majority of respondent from both age group prefer tablet form of supplement delivery method to capsule and most of them have more knowledge on Orthosiphon stamineus and Ziziphus mauritiana than other herb plants. This review will help academician, practitioner and researchers to take a closer look at the growth, development and applicability of this plants in several fields considering their functional properties.
