Abstract

Agarwood oil is claimed as one of the most valuable natural products and expensive oil in the world due to the fragrant chemical compound present in the wood. The main uses of agarwood essential oil are commonly used for medicinal purpose, perfumery products and also used as incense. However, throughout the year, there were still problems in extracting agarwood in since the current industrial practice of hydodistillation method still lack of information about the optimum parameters that need to be used to enhance the production of oil. This research aims to study the effect of varying different parameters on the percentage of oil yield and to investigate the optimum parameters of agarwood essential oil extraction using Clevenger hyrodistillation method. The chemical compound present in the oil sample was also identified by Gas Chromatography-Flame ionization Detector to identify the best quality of agarwood oil. The parameter that are manipulated in the research are agarwood size, soaking period and extraction time and the optimization process was done by Response Surface Methodology. The correlation analysis of the mathematical-regression model indicated that the quadratic polynomial model could be employed to optimize the hydrodistillation extraction of agarwood oil. Throughout this research, the type of grade C agarwood was used for hydrodistillation extraction of agarwood oil. From the study, the highest oil yield produced from this study was 0.372% oil yield at the optimum condition in which the size of agarwood is 0.2cm, the soaking period and extraction time is 9 days and 24 hours respectively. Besides, the amount of chemical compound present was determined by GC-FID and it shows that there are several major chemical compound present in the extracted oil namely 7-epi-ɣ- Eudesmol, β-Eudesmol, α-Eudesmol, 4-phenyl 2-butanone, Kusunol, agarospirol and Rotundone. The result revealed that there are more than 30 compounds were found in the extracted oil.
