Abstract

A second year (Package 11) project dissertation. Project Paper (Doctor of Medicine (MD)) - Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2013. Background:Cancer is the leading cause of death in economically developed countries and the second leading cause of death in developing countries. An estimated 371,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer are diagnosed world-wide each year, representing nearly 10% of all cancers in girl.In developing countries, cervical carcinoma was the most frequent neoplastic disease among women until the early 1990s. Objective: To determine the initial stage of presentation of cervical cancer patients in Hospital Serdang. Method: A cross-sectional study was done on 51 diagnosed cases from e-HIS system in Hospital Serdang. Fisher's Exact Test was used to analyze the data due to the assumption of Chi-square test are not met when there are more than 20% of the cells have expected frequency less than 5 for each of the sociodemographic characteristics. The sociodemographic characteristics for stage at cervical cancer at initial presentation among patients were studied. Results: The cervical cancer cases were shown to be mostly presented at an early stage in the older age group, the Malay race and in the married women. However, no data showed significant association between the stage of cervical cancer at initial presentation and the sociodemographic characteristics since p values are greater than 0.05. Conclusion: Based on the result, the null hypothesis is accepted, yet, we can still see the relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics and the stage of cervical cancer at initial presentation. In essence the cervical cancer cases mostly presented at an early stage. Across the sociodemographic parameters that we studied, it was found more in older age group, in Malay descent and in the married women. Preventive measures should be taken such as implementation of Pap smear screening as an important tool for early detection for the cervical cancer among women.
