Abstract

Several semi-artificial diets were evaluated for culturing Rhynchophorus schach Oliv. (Insecta: Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the laboratory. The biology and growth performance of the insect larave were studied. Three different diets consisting of sugarcane bagasse, copra cake and sago flour as main ingredients, and agar, yeast, sodium benzoate, vitamins, potassium sorbate, tetracycline hydrochloride and distilled water as other supplementary ingredients were used in the study. The larvae fed sago diet achieved the highest larval weight (8.1321 g), followed by copra cake diet at 5.3828 g and sugarcane bagasse diet at 4.3405 g. The R. schach larva had 8 instars. There was no significant difference in head capsule width within the same instars among the diets. Larvae from sago diet also had the longest larval period at 104 days, followed by sugarcane bagasse diet at 98.75 days and copra cake diet at 65.7 days. The fat content of R. schach larvae were highest in natural diet (sago pulp) at 57.8%, followed by copra cake (42.6%) and sugarcane bagasse (30.5%). Among the mineral composition analyzed, larvae of sugarcane bagasse diet had significantly higher contents of Zn (188.83 µgig) and Fe (118.80 µgig) than larvae of the other diets. There was no significant difference in the contents for Ca, Cu and Mg among larvae of all 3 diets. The different types of food resources and environment conditions have been identified as the main factors affecting the biology and life cycle of the Rhynchophorus schach
