Abstract
The objective of this study on utilization of empty fruit bunch (EFB) compost was to determine the effectiveness of EFB compost as growing media in comparison with other media for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) crop. The experiment was conducted under Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with each treatment having five replications giving a total of 20 experimental units or 20 polybags. Treatment one (Tl) was top soil also used as control, treatment two (T2) empty fruit bunch compost (EFB), treatment three (TI) top soil mixed with chicken litter in 3: 1 ratio by volume and for treatment four (T4) top soil mixed with sand and chicken litter in 3:2:1 ratio by volume. All experimental units were placed under rain shelter structure without insect netting. The study was conducted at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus, Sarawak, Malaysia. The EFB treatment media was compared with other treatments media of different mixture, as indicated, to observe the crop performance. The model crop selected for this study was tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) from the Red Crown variety to asses the effectiveness of EFB treatment media against the other treatment media. In this experiment, plants that were grown in the EFB treatment media have produced higher yield of fruits and better growth performance compared to other treatment media. The parameters used to evaluate the performance of tomato grown in the various treatment media include weight (in gram) of fruit and number of fruit yield per plant. The results from this study suggested that the EFB organic compost can be used as alternative media for growing tomato and perhaps also for other vegetable crops.
