Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of four ingredients of diet on the insectary culture of the corn earworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner). The four main ingredients for the diet were mungbean (Phaseolus aureus), dahl (Cicer arietinum) soybean (Glycine max), and wheat (Triticum aestivum). The parameters assessed included larval weight and growth, pupal weight and yield, adult emergence, fecundity, egg hatchability and longevity of the insect. There were five instars for the corn earworm. The wheat diet was the best overall among the four diets. Mungbean was good for larval growth, but the pupal yield were 20% significantly lower than wheat. Dahl was poor in larval growth, but had better pupa yield compared to mungbean and soybean diets. Overall the adult emergence for all diet was good. However the wheat and mungbean diets were the best in adult emergence, with 92.36% and 85.85% of emerged adults, respectively. About 12.5% of emerged adult from mungbean had severely deformed wings. The adult male longevity was almost two days shorter than females. Wheat produced the adult female and male with the greatest longevity of 14.75 and 12.81 days, respectively. The fecundity was still the highest for wheat, with 405 eggs laid per female and 59.25% of eggs hatchability. It was observed that, faster larval growth did not necessary lead to increased moth fitness. As the soybean diet produced shorter life span of moth, lower fecundity and eggs hatchability also occurred. On the other hand, wheat-reared larvae grew rather slow and fell behind at the beginning, but after a certain time, it quickly took-off and reached a heavier weight at the final instar. The wheat germ diet was the best in moth's longevity, fecundity and eggs hatchability.
