Abstract

The increase in feed prices and the real prospect of declining availability of grains for poultry has stimulated research into finding alternative feed sources. Sago product has been identified as a potential new poultry feed. It is also identified as a suitable alternative crop to com. As the sago and com supply the same function which is carbohydrate. Broiler quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica was used in this study. The objective of the study is to study the effect of sago supplement on the quail performance. The birds was subjected to three treatment which is treatment A, the control group, treatment B, diet with 10% sago flour and treatment C, diet with 20% sago flour. Every periods (5 days), the body weight data were collected and feed intake was calculated for every single day. Finally, the carcasses were weight after the ninth period. Quails fed by normal broiler starter commercial feed shows no significant different at (P<0.05) in body weight gain with those that's been fed by normal broiler starter with 10% and 20% sago flour added. The carcass weight also shows no significant different at (P<0.05) between the treatment A, B and C. But there is a significant different at (P<0.05) in feed intake between the treatment A and the treatment B and C. The quails eat less amount of feed in sago diet to get the same body weight and carcass weight with the normal broiler starter commercial feed was observed trough out this study. Here in Sarawak, they have so many sago plantation and it evolving. So the use of sago as carbohydrate provider in poultry feed can reduce the importation cost of the corn.
