Abstract
Caulerpa sp. is one of the seaweeds that have been found and recorded in Malaysia. Till now, there are twelve species and seven varieties of Caulerpa sp. has been found and recorded in Malaysia. A study of Caulerpa sp. was done in order to determine the morphology structure and habitat characteristic of Caulerpa sp. Samples were collected from three different locations, mainly from Port Dickson, Similajau and Sempoma. The morphological study was done using the morphometric measurements and observation regarding the shape of the ramuli and the habitat characteristic. There are seven species of Caulerpa that have been identified such as Caulerpa lentillifera 1. Agardh, C. sertularioides (Gmelin) Howe, C. taxifolia (Yahl) J. Agardh, C. crassifolia (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, C. racemosa (Forsskaal) J. Agardh var. macrophysa (Sonder ex Kutzing) W.R. Taylor, C. racemosa var. peltata (Lamouroux) Eubank and C. profilera (Forsskaal) Lamouroux f. zosterifolia Bergesen. All of these species have coenocytic thalli consisting of branching horizontal stolon bearing erect branches of ramuli. Various forms of ramuli are spherical (C. lentillifera), feather-like (C. sertularioides, C. taxifolia, C. crassifolia), subspherical (C. racemosa var. macrophysa), long narrow blade (C. prolifera) and disc-like (C. racemosa var. peltata). Their habitat characteristic is also different, where some species were found in alga patch, intertidal waters, mussy, sandy and rocky substrates, and at corals. Although morphological structures of some Caulerpa sp. do not have significant change in different locations, for example, the shape of the ramuli of the C. lentillifera from Sempoma and Port Dickson are similar (spherical shaped), but some morphometric measurement within the same species of Caulerpa have significant change based on three different locations (Port Dickson, Similajau and Bintulu).
