Abstract
Feeding preference of Coptotermes curvignathus on ten selected planted tree species, namely Acacia mangium, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia crassicarpa, Eucalyptus hybrid, Macaranga gigantea, Gmelina arborea, Tectona grandis, Azadirachta excelsa, Hevea brasiliensis and Pentaspadon motleyi were determined using four feeding preference tests. It consists of a multiple choice test using both fresh and oven-dried wood (sapwood and heartwood), and force feeding test andmultiple choice test within a single harbourage using oven-dried wood (sapwood and heartwood). Rubber wood (H. brasiliensis) was significantly preferred with total consumption of 554.97 mg, 391.63 mg, 179.78 mg and 159.83 mg in all preference test respectively. This is followed by P. motleyi with total consumption of 215.47 mg, 16?.39 mg, 146.07 mg and 81.22 mg respectively. The least preferred species were A .. crassicarpa, T. grandis, A. mangi,um, M gi,gantea, E. hybrid, A. auriculiformis, G. arborea and A. excelsa in descending order where most of them were non significantly_ different or with minor significant level in certain test. The significant preference in sapwood was also seen in total consumption of 163.03 mg, 151.40 mg and 51.49 mg compare to heartwood with total consumption of 91.73 mg, 46.22 mg and 22.85 mg in all test except multiple choice test with oven-dried wood with no difference between them. This result concluded the high potential of pelajau as bating matrix besides rubber wood in peat soil oil palm plantation and timber plantation sectors.
