Abstract

In this study four cultivars of chili were selected namely 'Cili Besar' (Capsicum annum), 'Cili Jarum' (Capsicum annum), 'Cili Api' (Capsicumfrutescens), and 'Cili Gerunung Merah' (Capsicum chinense). Fresh chili seeds were extracted from each of the cultivars and seeds at O days after extraction (ODAE-seeds), 5DAE-seeds, I ODAE-seeds and 15D AE-seeds were tested for germination using the Petri Dish and wet paper towel methods. In addition, Tetrazolium test was also conducted to ascertain seed viability. Results from Petri dish and wet paper towel tests showed that there were no significant difference in the rate of seed germination between fresh seeds and older seeds within cultivars except Cili Api which showed significantly less gennination of seeds at 15 days after extraction. Similar trend of germination was also noted among cultivars. In general, seed viability of all chili cultivars maintained high germination capacity for up to 15 days or longer at normal room conditions.
