Abstract

The experiment was carried out in the Propagation Unit at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus to study the growth performances of four different orchid species namely Coelogyne pandurata, Coelogyne rochusseni, Eria jloribunda, and Bulbophyllum vaginatum grown on different medium using clay pots and tree fern (Cythea sp.) stem. The medium used consisted of charcoal and broken brick (Tl), cocoa peat and broken brick (T2), sphagnum moss, perlite and broken brick (T3). The experiment design used for this experiment was CRD. The treatments replicated 3 times and each replicate consists of 10 samples. There was no significant difference in the survival rates of all the four orchids even though Bulbophylum vaginatum showed higher percentage of survival (76.67%). There was a significant difference between the different growth medium used in which C. ruchessinii (2.53a) and B. vaginatum (5.97b) are more suitable on charcoal and broken brick. Charcoal and broken brick is the most suitable medium as compared to cocoa peat and broken brick and also mixture of sphagnum moss, perlite and broken brick. Mixtures of cocoa peat and broken brick not suitable for growing this orchid maybe due to compact solid mass that became sodden when wet and thus created an environment conducive for fungal attack.
