Abstract

Introduction: Academic burden is a situation where students feel overwhelmed by the requirements of time and energy to attain certain academic goals. This situation could lead to students’ health problems, such as mental health disorders. These problems are frequently a result of unintended outside influences, such as parents or the desire to fit in with peers, along with the growing competitive university admissions process. To assure future success for both the student and the nation, student mental health is very crucial. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between academic pressure and mental health issues among undergraduate students at the Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methodology: This cross-sectional study assessed final-year Universiti Putra Malaysia undergraduates' mental health and stress levels related to their studies. The study used a snowball method, disseminating surveys through course representatives in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. A total of 175 participants were enrolled, and they answered four sections of a questionnaire: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), the Perceptions of Academic Stress Scale (PASS), and sociodemographic information. After that, descriptive and chi-square analyses of the data were performed using SPSS version 29. Results and Discussion: This study looked into the academic load and mental health of Universiti Putra Malaysia's final-year undergraduate students. Most respondents (77.1%) were female, 75.4% were Malay, and 4.0% had a clinical diagnosis of mental illnesses, according to the sociodemographic data. According to the mental health examination, 42.9% of respondents reported having anxiety and 42.9% reported having depression, with differing degrees of these conditions. Academic stress was associated with several factors, including pressures to perform, workload, time limits, and self-perception. Courses, which are sociodemographic determinants, had strong correlations with anxiety and sadness. Time restrictions and performance pressures were shown to be important associated with depression, although time constraints alone were linked to anxiety. The study highlights that in order to overcome academic pressure and mental health problems, one must practice effective self-management, governance, medical treatment, social support, and religion. Most students chose effective self-management, such as time management and having personal time, as a coping mechanism for stress related to their academic work as well as mental health issues. The results of this study offer significant perspectives for creating focused treatments aimed at improving undergraduate students' overall welfare. Conclusion: Results showed that academic burden is significantly associated with mental health. As a result, this study offered numerous ways to help undergraduate students deal with their academic load and mental health concerns. Keywords: Academic burden, mental health, anxiety, depression, undergraduate students
