Abstract
Introduction: Urban areas are known for their rapid economic growth, dense population, and high levels of air pollution due to anthropogenic activities. Recently, microplastics which the small plastic particles that has diameter less than 5mm were found in road dust all around the world. Objectives: This study aims to identify microplastic particles characteristics (size, shape and colour), to assess the association between microplastic particle size and land use activities (residential area, industrial area, illegal dumping area and busy traffic area) and identifies the potential sources of microplastics in urban road dust from Puchong, Selangor. Methodology: The density separation method involving mixture of Potassium chloride and Zinc chloride was utilized. The extracted microplastics particles from urban road dust samples were analyzed using microscopic technique. Results and Discussion: Microplastic particle size detected was 273.494 μm (the shortest) and 932.094 μm (the longest), with black fragments and granular being predominant. The significant differences were found between microplastic particle size and land use activities indicated there are different potential sources such as industrial emissions, litters, traffic related sources, construction materials and water treatment plant that could contribute to the microplastic pollution. Conclusion: The abundance of microplastics black fragmented and granular were detected in urban road dust from Puchong, Selangor mainly caused by traffic-related sources. To ensure the reliable and accurate data of microplastics, the relationship between environmental factors and microplastic occurrence was recommended at the end of this study.
