Abstract
Introduction: Recently, the issue of foodborne diseases is being discussed in detail as Malaysia has recorded high numbers of cases which is about 9.5 thousand food poisoning cases in 2022. The identified risk factors associated with foodborne illnesses include inappropriate cooking time, unsuitable temperature, unacceptable handling of food, improper cleaning of cooking materials and utensils and improper food storage. Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the undergraduate final year of health sciences student’s knowledge, attitude and practices towards food safety and hygiene in Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study design and universal sampling design were used. A total of 197 respondents from five different departments (Biomedical, Nutrition, Dietetic, Environmental and Occupational Health, Nursing) participated in this study. A set of moderated self-administered questionnaires was utilized in this study. Results and Discussion: The result showed that most of the health sciences students have moderate knowledge and attitude towards food safety and poor hygiene practices. Chi-square test showed a significant association (p<0.05) between knowledge and attitude level on food safety with hygiene practices. Besides, there was also a significant association (p<0.05) between food poisoning experience with hygiene practices among health sciences students. Conclusion: This study showed the moderate knowledge level, moderate attitude level and poor practices on food safety and hygiene among the health sciences students in all five categories of departments. This might because personal habits, cultural or family influences and access to resources. Hence, it is recommended for university to develop one subject and practical related to food safety and hygiene for students to learn. Keywords: Knowledge, Attitude, Practice, Food safety, Hygiene
