Abstract

Introduction: Adhering to a strong work safety culture (WSC) reduces the likelihood of workplace accidents for employees. However, Work safety culture have been acknowledged, there is a notable deficiency in comprehending the information, viewpoints, and behaviors of supporting staff in university environments. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess knowledge, perspective and practice on work safety culture among supporting staff at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire in both English and Malay language to collect information on social-demographic characteristics, knowledge, perspective, and practice on safety culture, and suggestions to improve the knowledge of the supporting staff. Results and Discussion: Out of the total number of participants (n=102), a significant majority (70.3%) demonstrated a commendable level of knowledge regarding safety culture. There is an association between sociodemographic data (age, gender, and race) towards knowledge on work safe culture. A significant number of respondents hold the belief that education plays a vital role in improving understanding and awareness of work safety cultures. Conclusion: The findings offer significant insights for stakeholders to develop and execute effective interventions that improve safety awareness and encourage the adoption of safer work practices within the university community. Research emphasizes the crucial role of knowledge in fostering safe practices within university communities. By focusing on knowledge acquisition, positive cultural shifts, targeted risk mitigation, policy adherence, individual empowerment, and continuous improvement, universities can create a safer, more engaged, and ultimately, a thriving environment for all members of their community.
