Abstract

The Dairy Unit at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was found to be incompatible as a commercial unit. However, the Dairy Unit has important functions for teaching and research. Its cash flow projection over ten years revealed negative net present values at discount rates of 8%, 10%, 12%, 20%, and 28%. The break-even point was found to be in 1981 at a herd size of 177 adult cows. If the cash flow projection was done over 20 years, the net present value at 8% discount rate was positive. Herd health control programmes were carried out at various costs. Production cost per unit Kilogram of milk was found to be $o.15₵, while maintenance cost per cow was at $2644.44t per year. Loss in revenue was recorded in some of the following items: a) milk processing, b) sub-clinical mastitis, c) animal mortality, and d) unsold milk. Changes in some of the present management practices, disease control and marketing policy are shown to be economically beneficial.
