Abstract

Project Paper (B.Sc. Nursing) - Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2012. Introduction: Musculoskeletal discomfort (MSD) is a condition which occurs when mismatch occurs between the physical requirements of the job and the physical capacity of the human body. It ranked number one among the chronic impairments seen by the physicians and has been reported to disturbed 1:4 people. The residuals of this condition could be permanent or temporary to the muscular system, which may causing discomfort or pain. Etiologies of musculoskeletal discomforts are associated with repetitive motion, posture and work related stress. Nursing tasks can affect all musculoskeletal system. Prevalence of MSD is increasing, however limited data on MSD among nurses in related hospital. Previous study in Malaysia dwelt on lower back pain, this study considered the entire body. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of the MSD and factors associated with MSD among nurses in Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru Hospital (HSAJB). Methodology: A cross sectional study design. A total of 164 nurses who met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected. Self-administered questionnaires consist; Section A) Socio-demographic; B) nursing task; C) coping strategies; and D) Cornel Musculoskeletal Discomfort (CMDQ), which used to determine the prevalence of MSD. The higher CMDQ score indicated high severity of MSD. Validity and reliability of questionnaire was done by pretested on 20 samples prior to the study. The descriptive statistic and Chi-Square test with significant level of significant is 0.05 (p<0.05) were employed for data analysis Results: Results: Findings indicated high prevalence of MSD 147 (86.5%) and the most common symptoms of discomforts and pain are. (67.7%) lower back, and the least (20%) forearm and wrist. There were associations between musculoskeletal with socio demographics age (p=0.001), gender (p=0.001), duration of services (p=0.05). Nursing task were significant with each musculoskeletal with handling equipment (p=0.05), lifting/transferring (p=0.00 1), and body mechanic (p=O.OO 1). Conclusion: This study which a high prevalence of MSD suggests urgent need of critical management interventions, to further research with a bigger population is needed to estimate prevalence the bigger population level.
