Abstract

A serological survey on the prevalence of Aujeszky's Disease in slaughtered pigs at Shah Alam Abattoir and some major farms in Selangor was conducted. A total of 398 serum samples were obtained in which 266 samples were from the abattoir. The serum neutralization test (SNT) was employed. On the whole, the prevalence rate was about 9.0% however, on the farm basis, pig farms from Sungai Buloh showed a prevalence rate of about 30%. One of the farms showed a high prevalence rate of about 44%. Other areas appeared to be ' free' from AD but the sample size may be the limiting factor. The serums were screened at the dilution of 1:8 before being further subjected to serum titration. The highest serum titre obtained was 1:64 with the majority at 1:8 and 1:16. The prevalence rate of AD among slaughtered pigs was about 2.2% but this may possibly be from the old sows. Samples collected from the farms were basically from sows with some form of reproductive problem however, the result did not support the relationship between reproductive problem and Aujeszky's Disease.
