Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the relationships between sociodemographic factors, body weight status and body image with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among female breast cancer survivors in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. A total of 60 female breast cancer survivors with a mean age of 58.4 years (SD = 8.3 years), who attended the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia (BCWA) participated in this study. They completed a self-administered questionnaire and their body weight and height were measured by the researcher. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) general cancer quality of life score (QLQ-C30) questionnaire and its breast cancer module (QLQ-BR23) were used to assess the HRQoL of the respondents. The Breast- Impact of Treatment Scale (BITS) was used to measure body image. More than half of the respondents were Chinese (53.3%) and majority of them were Christians (35.0%). The mean year of diagnosis was 9.75 years (SD = 6.63 years). A majority of them (73.3%) were diagnosed with stage 1 and 2 cancer. About one in two of the respondents (53.3%) underwent the surgery of mastectomy without reconstruction. A majority of them were post-menopausal (70.0%) and had no family history of breast cancer (83.3%). One in four of the respondents (25.0%) was overweight and obese. Low body image distress was reported, with a mean score of 18.93 (SD = 12.50). Respondents reported favorable overall HRQoL. Pearson's product moment correlation test showed that there was no significant correlation between BMI and most of the domains of HRQoL. However, significant correlations were found between body image and most of the domains of HRQoL. There were no significant correlations between socio-demographic factors (age, years after diagnosis and monthly household income) with most of the domains of HRQoL. In conclusion, breast cancer survivors in this study had a good HRQoL and a positive body image but unhealthy body weight status. Intervention programme is needed to overcome the high prevalence of overweight and obesity. Promoting positive body image should be integrated in the intervention programme in order to improve the HRQoL among breast cancer survivors.
