Abstract
Childhood obesity has been a rising global issue. Other than looking at the dietary factors as well as physical activity, environmental and ecological factors should also be assessed such as the role of mothers on the growth of their children. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the association between maternal factors ( depressive symptoms and child feeding practices) and body weight status of children age 2-6 years attending Tabika and Taska KEMAS in Putrajaya. A set of self-administered questionnaire was completed by mothers to obtain information on sociodemographic factors, depressive symptoms and child feeding practices. Height and weight of the children were measured. A total of 247 questionnaires were completed. The mean age of mothers was 34.74 ± 3.56 years with at least secondary level of education (32.0%). Mean monthly income was RM 2409.33 ± 1188.87 while the mean household income was RM 4986.98 ± 1708.79. As for children, 49.0% are male with the mean age of 5.01 ± 0.95 years. Their mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 15.05 ± 1. 70 kg/m2 and 7.3% of them were underweight and 10.9% were overweight and obese. There were 9.7% of mothers reported to have moderate to severe depressive symptoms. The mean score for restriction, pressure and monitoring feeding practices were 3.74 ± 0.55, 3.97 ± 0.67 and 3.86 ± 0.84 respectively. No significant associations between maternal factors and body weight status of children were found from this study. Further study is needed to confirm this finding yet it proves the dual-burden of malnutrition in an urban area.
