Abstract
This study was conducted to determine gut content of red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) that focused on plankton identifications and presence in digestive tracts of the crayfish in their natural habitat. Three sampling was conducted in UPMKB, and crayfish samples were collected using fish traps, killed, and dissected to remove the digestive tract. The digestive tracts were fixed in 5% formalin. A total of 19 species and 154 individuals of planktons were identified. Results showed a significant difference of plankton species between sampling stations and no significant difference was found in digestive tracts. Station 3 was consistent on having high individual number of planktons compared to other stations whilst the stomach and posterior intestine comprise high individual number compared with other digestive parts in each sampling times. In conclusion, the gut content analysis showed that there were planktons within the digestive system of red claw crayfish. The presence of planktons depends on the location influenced by human activities on the locations and planktons could be frequently found in stomach and posterior intestine. The evidence of plankton availability in digestive tract of red claw crayfish is proven but how the red claw crayfish consume planktons is still unknown. This study provides information to the public regarding the presence of plankton species inside red claw crayfish and formulation of crayfish feeds using planktons as supplement to complete the diet.
