Abstract
A study based on faecal examination , personal communication and observation was conducted on horses of all age in National Stud Farm, Tg. Rambutan, Perak. The horses were conveniently divided into six management groups. It was found that there was high prevalent of Strongyloides westeri among the foals below months of age. Some of the foals were clinically affected with signs of diarrhoea and unthriftiness. Strongyles spp. were mainly prevalent among the yearlings (88.89%), geldings (66.67%) mares (74%) and stallions (100%). Most of the infections of these animals were characterized by high egg counts indicating heavy parasitic burden. Larval cultures of the strongyles eggs indicated that Trichonema spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. as the most common species present. Several management factors such as overcrowding, inappropriate manure disposal, inadequate length of pasture spelling and constant movement of animals between paddocks were associated to the prevalent parasitic infestations. Other factors such as inefficient use of anthelmintics, spreading of manure directly onto pasture and the tropical climate predispose animals to parasitic infection readily. Thus, there is an immediate need to devise an effective control measures to be employed over a prolonged period to prevent clinical cases of parasitism.
