Abstract

Borate-buffered saline pH 9.0 and virus adjusting diluent pH 6.5 were used as the diluents for canine parvovirus (CPV) and porcine red blood cell (RBC) respectively in the haemagglutination and haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests HI test with 1% ( v/v) porcine RBC was used to assay antibody (Ab) in dogs following vaccination with modified live (ML) or inactivated CPV. CPV-immune dogs (serum HI Ab titres of ≥ 2560) which were vaccinated with ML CPV vaccine responded significantly 2 weeks after booster vaccination, whereas dogs with pre-booster serum HI Ab titres of ≥ 2560 seroconverted only 4 weeks after booster vaccination with inactivated CPV. The HI Ab titres of the Labrador were comparatively higher than that of the German Shepherd following vaccination with inactivated CPV. Rottweiler puppies with maternal HI Ab of ≤80 responded better to the first dose of CPV vaccination than those with maternal HI Ab of 160.
