Abstract

Tropical forests have been decreasing due to forest deforestation. Deforestation occurs mainly because of logging, shifting cultivation and land clearing for agricultural purposes. lf preservation or restoration of this forest is not done, it might lead to extinction of the biodiversity in the forest. A study was conducted in Bintulu Rehabilitated forest to identify the shade tolerant species in this forest and assess the growth performance of the species at four different aged stands in terms of height, DBH and also survival rate. Tree inventory had been done from September to December 2008. Ten shade tolerant species were identified. They are Cotylelobium burkii, Durio zibethinus, Eusideroxylon zwageri, Koompassia malaccensis, Nephelium lappaceum, Shorea parvifolia, Palaquium gutta, Parashorea parvifolia, and Shorea macrophylla. Eighty one trees were found in plot 1, 14 trees in plot 2, 14 trees in plot 3 and 30 trees in plot 4. The average DBH and height of the species are almost the same in each plot. This study shows shade tolerant species grow slower at the early succession as shade tolerant species are climax species where it will stand high when the canopy is closed and the forest is fully shaded. Continuous study will reveal more information on the long term performance of these species in this rehabilitated forest.
