Abstract

In recent year, gaharu producing plants; Aquilaria species is widely cultivated in Malaysia because of its high economic value. Gaharu is the most expensive tree resin in the world due to its fragrant and medical value. One of the tree species producing gaharu in Sarawak is Aquilaria microcarpa. The Sarawak government is encouraging local people to cultivate gaharu as one measure to eradicate the poverty and increase the home income of local people. Therefore, this study analyse the most effective and efficient amount of fertilizer application on the growth of A. microcarpa tree. The aim of this study is to determine the suitable amounts of fertilizer application base on the growth performance of A. microcarpa and to determine the growth rate of A. microcarpa by using different types of fertilizers. This study has four treatments that is control (Tl), NPK fertilizer (T2), Organic compost (T3), and Slow-release fertilizer (T4). All treatments have five replicates in each different amount of 100 g (Al), 200 g (A2) and 300 g (A3) except for control treatment. The NPK fertilizer is applied monthly while Organic compost and Slowrelease fertilizer only applied once in the initial study. There are two parameters measured in this study that is height and DBH (diameter at breast height). The observation was done over three month after fertilizers application. The obtained result was statistically analyzed using ANOVA with DMRT analysis. The result shows that there is no significant effect of different fertilizers amounts of all fertilizer treatments on the growth rate of A. microcarpa. The compared treatment only show the significant different of Tl towards T2, T3, and T4. All fertilizers give the same effect on the growth of A. microcarpa. Therefore, the suitable amount of fertilizer is at 100 g application. All types of fertilizers applications increase the growth rate of A.microcarpa at Asap Koyan, Belaga.
