Abstract
Malaysian people are currently facing with health problems that are related with their body weight status. Changing of lifestyles among the population including reduced physical activity and consumption of foods high in calories have led to overweight and obesity issues. This study was conducted to investigate the associations between socio-demographic, household food security, physical activity, dietary intake and body weight status among women in PPR Pinggiran Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. A cross-sectional study was conducted in PPR Pinggiran Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur involving 132 women aged 18 to 49 years old. A set of questionnaire was conducted among mothers by face-to face interviewed session. Anthropometric measurements were taken after end of the interview session and BMI was calculated. Based on the findings, majority of the respondents (67%) were categorised in overweight and obese group. Socio-demographic factors which were age (r=0.35, p<0.02), employment status (x2=3.917, p<0.05), education level (x,2=7.061, p<0.05) and household monthly income (r=-0.35, p=<0.05) were associated with body mass index (BM!). Household food security (r=-0.24, p=0.01) was significantly associated with body mass index (BMI). Intervention on improving women's health status should be done at early stages of life to prevent future health problems. Holistic efforts from government and non- government agencies also can help to improve their future health status. Also, focusing on health awareness among low-income population should be a priority to work on.
