Abstract

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of using Effective Microorganisms (EM) on growth performance and egg production of layer chickens. Dietary treatments consisted of supplementation with 3% of I :50 EM-A (Tl), 6% of I :50 EM-A (T2) and without EM-A (T3-control). Supplementing EM to layer chickens' feed gave significant effect on live weight, feed conversion ratio and egg quality ( egg sizes and egg weight). During the fourth week, layer chickens supplemented with EM (T2) had significantly highest live weight (1087.33 g) compared to control group (1009.53 g). The improvements in live weight were associated with slight enhancement of feed conversion ratio (2.60). The efficiency in feed conversion ratio therefore effect the quality of eggs where T2 showed the highest mean value of egg sizes (5.85 cm) and egg weight (65.36 g). This study has shown that EM has growth promoting characteristics that result on better growth and egg quality production.
