Abstract
A study was done to determine concentrations of oil and grease (OG) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in coastal waters of Bintulu. Sample of surface water at 1m depth was collected between November 2008 to February 2009 at sampling site of Similajau, Tanjung Batu, Pantai Ria and Bintulu Waterfront. Samples were further extracted using n-hexane, and solvent evaporation. The concentrations were determined by gravimetric method. The OG concentrations determined was ranged between 4.927 to 30.211 mg/I and the TPH concentrations was between 3.813 tol2.00 mg/I. Site 5 and 6 of estuary Sungai Kemana was significantly higher in TPH, meanwhile site 5 was significantly higher in oil and grease. In comparison to previous studies, the results are relatively higher. The concentrations were above the standard level of marine water quality. Thus, coastal waters of Bintulu can be classified as polluted.
