Abstract

Summary: Background: Statistic from Malaysia Royal Police shows 414,421 road users were involved in road crash in year 20 I O. Road crash injuries are seventh in the top ten causes of death in Malaysia and fourth in the top five admitted in hospital in Malaysia in year 2010. Traffic crashes in the prime years of people's lives obviously affect their everyday lives, and also their productivity. Although physical injuries can be treated through medical care and rehabilitation, the psychosocial impact can last for several weeks, months, years, or even throughout the life. The most common psychological traumas for motor vehicle crash survivors are depression and anxiety, which affect not only personal quality of life, but also families and society. The symptoms found in the first month after crashes have been termed acute stress disorder (ASD). Objective: This study aims to gain the knowledge of psychological effects and its association among motorcyclist crash survivors. Methodology: A cross sectional study design was conducted and 116 participants were recruited from Orthopedic Clinic of Hospital Serdang in Selangor. The patients were interviewed to collect socio-demographic data, acute stress disorders score by Acute Stress Disorders Scale (ASDS) and depression and anxiety level by Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS21) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed by statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 19.0. Results: The data distribution of age was 34.63 ± 12.71 years (range 18 to 59). Overall distribution of acute stress disorders was 37.61 ± 8.908. The results showed acute stress disorders have an association with depression (p=0.028) and stress (p=0.050). However there were no association between acute stress disorders with anxiety (p=0.21 5). Conclusion: The findings suggest that traffic crashes have an impact on people's psychosocial wellbeing. Anxiety have higher level of psychological effects on respondents, however there was no association between acute stress disorders with anxiety level. Respondents who have acute stress disorders are more likely to have significant association with depression level and also stress level. Keywords: Acute Stress Disorders.
