Abstract

Increasing prevalence of diabetes can be linked to lifestyle changes, especially our dietary habits. Brewers' rice, or locally recognized as temukut, is a by-product of rice milling. Usually, it is utilized as animal feed and brewing material, whereas it is still uncommon for human consumption. This combination of broken rice, rice bran, and rice germ is not only a source of carbohydrate, but also contains rich sources of antioxidants like vitamin E, phytic acid and y-oryzanol. Also, it has been shown to inhibit a-amylase and a-glucosidase activity by in vitro method, thus enhancing blood glucose control. The present in vivo study aimed to examine the effects of brewers' rice in streptozotocin-induced (STZ) hyperglycemic rats. A total of 24 Sprague-Dawley male rats were used and divided into four groups. Treatment groups were defined as follows: normal rats fed with normal diet (01), diabetic rats fed with normal diet (02), diabetic rats fed with 10% brewers' rice (03) and diabetic rats fed with 40% brewers' rice (04). Rats in 02, 03 and 04 were injected once with STZ (55 mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally. Brewers' rice was administered in the diet for three weeks. Food and water intake, body weight and blood glucose level were recorded. At the end of the experiment, change in fasting blood glucose (FBO) level was observed. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOV A) with Tukey post-hoc test, with p-value < 0.05 considered significant. The results demonstrated that consumption of brewers' rice at concentration 40% reduced the blood glucose level of the diabetic rats after three weeks although the difference between baseline and final FBO level was insignificant (p > 0.05), considering that the treatment duration was too short. In conclusion, this study found the potential value of brewers' rice in the management of diabetes .
